Drive!

Drive!

A Poem by Richard M
"

The need, independence and power of driving.

"

Moving forward in this life

I was going to need a car,

to continue on in independence,

to be seen to be on par.

To live life was my dream,

didn't want to be left behind, but

  seen running with the crowd,

wanting choice, a new path to find.

Eighteen, had to wait awhile

  my first car dad bought,

automatic, fitted hand controls

giving the freedom that I sought.

I spent time ‘paddock-bashing’

  before the open road, then

  the dreaded driving test, but

a licence and I was good to go!

The lady who’d previously owned it

was happy the car belonged to me,

opening up my world, giving

new horizons for me to see.

My friends happy I now had wheels,

good times and Friday nights,

the teenage ‘thing’ we need to do,

a few bingles and times of fright.

Moving forward as I needed,

continuing to make my way,

people to meet, places to go, and

a life to live and play.

Two more cars in their time

  graced my parking space,

freedom, courage calling,

keeping me apace.

Driving my greatest achieve,

another mountain climbed,

now one of the running crowd,

no longer left behind.

It opened up so much my choice

of want and need to do,

it's another dimension to my voice,

with it confidence grew!

It happens every now and then

  I get the urge to DRIVE;

take the car, just get out,

a yearning within to thrive!

It’s something I love to do,

with it, I am so proud,

helps to clear the mind,

freedom screaming loud!

Driving is one of things every kid wants to do. I failed my first road test. The old lad, the squirrel that ran out, and the curb that attacked me when I was backing up left me no choice. ha

I like the rhymes and nice easy flow to this.

Nice one, Richard. :)

The same to you, Richard. :)
My father bought my first car for $40. I suppose that's exactly how much it was worth but it sure was special to me.

Growing up in the boondocks, a major pastime was driving. We had nowhere to go, just exploring the beautiful mountains & streams & coastline around here. Driving is what we DID! So your poem draws from this idea a little bit, but also with much more of the overall budding experience to have driving possibilities opening up for this seemingly young narrator. Great construction with rhyme & rhythm that flows smoothly but not distracting from your enthusiastic dynamic storyline, which is what really shines here (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

You need the car to play music. But there is a great joy when you hit the open road.
