A Howl Is Louder Than Most Things

A Howl Is Louder Than Most Things

A Poem by Spencer Bridges
"

An animal's panic in a frightening world.

"
A howl is louder than most things
The fear it brings to all things near
The panicked flight of those with wings
The alerted face of a deer

The crunch of snow under it's foot like a light pause
The beat of it's heart as it pictures the wolves claws

They would strip, They would scratch, They would scrape it

So the deer ran and it ran,
In an attempt to escape it

It did not get far for the wolf attacked
The wolfs long claws had ripped through it's back

The deer's scream was louder than most things
But it brought relief to the animals at bay
Because they knew the wolf had eaten that day.

Very very clever. The meaning of the poem shifted at least twice, and it felt like I was on a roller coaster as I was reading it. I love the last two lines. They wrap up the poem perfectly. And the highlighted section is well done, because a thought like that in an animals mind would definitely be a desperate one. The rhymes seem well placed, and it's always good to see a poem that just seems to naturally rhyme.
