Thoughts to a Struggling Friend

Thoughts to a Struggling Friend

A Poem by Sel Whiteley

I know all sentiments can only seem saccharin,

too well-tuned a music, and silence a torn void
in your mind, like an alcoholic, stood jeering.
I can only say that suffering strengthens you -
the wisest state that life is an uphill struggle
since at the top are the most serene sights.
I think of a multitude of saffron-clothed monks
persecuted into their own perfect Nirvanas.

I like the rumble of the finale to this piece as walls come tumbling down

Your words are true to a certain point. Some struggle need to create change. When the world is led by rich men/woman controlled by lobbyist and self gain. We need change ASAP. The world problem is simple. The rich countries have peaked and need to downsize the government and quit fighting war where we are not needed and wanted. I love your country. The people of the United Kingdom do better then the USA. Maybe we are too big and people here in the USA don't want to see the truth. Nirvana is a dream in today world. Too much hate and war. A excellent poem. Made me think. Purpose of a good writer.

The analogy of the alcoholic at first seemed inappropriate but when I considered the loss of sensation and awareness due to overwhelming circumstances and with only the raw emotion of rejection left to slow the pain, I thought...brilliant. The contrast is stark but harmonious as you employed monks obtaining Nirvana as bold imagery. On the whole, the message is true and hopeful with the bittersweet reality of every journey.
