Happy Birthday Tom

Happy Birthday Tom

A Poem by Sel Whiteley

Today, will be a day of ales downed,

smooth and creamy as the years

and celebrations alight with the luxury

of champagne in ice and the music

of clinking fluted glasses and laughter,

fraternities of pub football and crisps.

Today, will be a day to reminisce,

on the barbeques held, guitars and gigs

played half a decade past, still filmic

in the mind, to move into a future

just as joyous, Guinness in hand;

here’s a toast Tom, to you being you.

i love this piece. very nice balanced and intelligent with a sort of wink and hug vibe.

maybe i'm projecting but i really dug how this was not gender specific, the toaster has an easy quality that is both tom-boyish and also seductive in a friends (maybe with benefits?) way. ;o)

ok. so some of my favorite lines,

"smooth and creamy as the years" - this just gave a lot of context to the relatioship... sort of a quick metaphor to sum up the history.

"on the barbeques held, guitars and gigs
played half a decade past, still filmic" - i love the slight use of alliteration here, the way it just rolls and flows. very nice. at first i was like, "filmic"? but the word is so unique and strange that it is perfect.

very beautiful tribute to a very lucky guy.
