Chapter One

Chapter One

A Chapter by Sparrow01

Sirens echoed off the buildings and filled the otherwise silent street. It seemed like there was always some kind of crime or emergency going on. As he walked down the sidewalk, Keiran shoved his hands into the pockets of his leather jacket and took in a deep breath. The scent of blood hung in the air and caused the beast inside him to stir. He tilted his head back and looked up at the moon that shone brightly.

He growled out and ran a hand through his hair, grumbling quietly to himself. “S**t, I’ll let you out soon.” He hoped no one passed by right now because he would look just as insane as he felt.

With a grunt, he started to follow the scent of the blood. The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end; he knew he needed to proceed into whatever he was walking into with caution. He reached under the fold of his jacket and pulled out his Glock, keeping it ahead of himself.

The body he came upon was twisted beyond all recognition, a sign that the deceased had been tortured. Questions ran through his head as he knelt by the corpse, holding his gun by his side. Who was it that had tortured this man? More importantly, what was the information they were torturing him for?

With a careful and steady hand, he picked up the note he saw by the body and held it up to the moonlight. There was one symbol in the middle of the paper; it looked like it had been torn out of a small notepad and tossed before the suspect left.

He recognized this symbol, in fact, he knew it very well. It was an elaborate portrait of the head of a wolf, but across its face was a red sword and spear. Another growl rumbled through his chest and the beast inside began to stir uneasily. “Relax,” he muttered under his breath, even though there was no one around. No one alive, that is.

The sounds of gun fire rang in his ears and with a curse he ducked into the nearest shadow. His hand balled into a fist, crushing the small piece of paper in the middle of his palm. Shoving the paper into his pocket, he gripped the butt of his gun with both of his strong hands and looked in the direction the shots had come from. He spotted a van racing away and he let off two shots. They only hit the back of the van which was gone as fast as it had come.

Moments passed and when he was sure nothing else was going to jump out and shoot at him, he let out a breath and stepped out of the shadows. He patted the side of his pocket to ensure that the note was still there. He would call in reinforcements, but this little note would not be a part of the evidence list.

Taking another quick glance around, he pulled out his phone and dialed the number he had memorized. “This is Detective Marrok requesting back up at the corner of Main Street and 31st.” He described what it was that he had come across and waited for the others to come.

Ten minutes later and he was being questioned about what had happened by the Chief of the Boston police. “What the hell happened? Why were you shot at?”

"I don’t know.”

“What do you mean, you don’t know?”

Keiran resisted the urge to roll his eyes. The Chief sounded like a damn elementary kid sometimes. “I mean I don’t know. All I do know is that I saw the body and right before I was going to call for backup, I heard the sound of gunfire. I ducked out of the way and saw a van speeding away. I managed to get off two shots, but from what I know it only hit the back of the van.”

“Well, did you at least get the license plate?”

He cursed himself. He had been so distracted by the note he’d found that he forgot his normal every day duties as a policeman. “No,” he mumbled quietly.

“I didn’t hear you, man.”

“No,” he repeated himself a little louder, bracing himself for the explosion.

“What the hell, Marrok? So you get shot at and completely forget what you’re supposed to do?!”

“Sorry, Chief.”

“Sorry’s beginning not to cut it. Now, go.”

Keiran stood straight and turned away from the Chief. He liked the man, hell, he even respected his lust for solving crimes, but he wasn’t about to walk away with his tail tucked between his legs after being scolded.

Moving over to the other detectives, he listened to them, gaging their reactions to what they were looking at. They still hadn’t moved the body away; the forensics team was documenting evidence and taking pictures. He looked at the detective’s faces. Some of them couldn’t even look in the direction of the body. Others had that determined look, the one that said ‘I’m going to be the one to solve this case.’ Little did they know that they would be missing the most vital piece of evidence. This case was now his and his alone.

When the body had been taken away and all of the emergency vehicles had cleared out, he leaned back against his own car and struck a match on the bottom of his boot. Lifting it up, he lit the end of the cigarette that he had hanging from between his lips. His smoking had become a nasty habit since…

He stopped that thought right there. He wasn’t going to think about her, not tonight. Swallowing hard, he nodded a goodbye to the Chief with a smirk and got into his car to drive back home to his pack.

Robert let out a curse and fell back against the seat as his driver sped away. He hadn’t actually expected the damn alpha of the pack to show up right after they’d dumped the body. But he sure as hell did, and he had fired off about three shots, none of which hit their mark.

He slammed his hand down on the middle console and stared out the window, anger building in the pit of his stomach and spreading throughout his body like a hungry fire.

His original plan had been for the alpha to find his little note that he’d left and try to come find him himself. Then when the leader of the wolf shifters showed up at his little abode, he’d make him feel welcome in the most…interesting way possible. He’d recently ordered some new tools that he’d been wanting to try out, too.

When he’d seen the alpha show up, a mixture of emotions ran through him. He’d felt a little disappointed at first; he was really wanting to use those tools. Then he felt elated. Here was an opportunity to take out the alpha, right here and right now…but he had to f*****g miss.

He squeezed his eyes closed and pinched the bridge of his nose, fighting off the headache that was threatening to arise. When he felt somewhat calm, he ordered his driver to take him back.

None of this mattered. He’d take down the alpha and his pack, no matter what it took, and when he was done with them, he wouldn’t stop there. No, he’d find the rest of the world’s shifters and eliminate them all, too. They were all monstrosities that didn’t belong here, didn’t deserve to even breathe, and he was the only one to take care of this infestation.

Interesting beginning. I like that the Alpha's a little rough. A lot of books mistake being bossy for being Alpha, but judging from your first chapter, I don't think that will be the case (which is nice). I look forward to reading more.
