Avey Ellis

A Poem by . . .
"

For a childhood friend of mine.

"

As a child I was your captain,

sailing down a river of solid earth

its mouth open wide at the site between trees

As a child you were a sparrow,

bathing in dust under warm eggshell paint

collecting seeds in a humble pile near your perch

As a child she did not understand

what it meant to be nothing at all,

spared from sightless grief hiding in the creases ahead

You were a child

nothing else

and never again

nice imagery sad, fragile, and bird-like. the arrangement of words show a nurturing-yet tragic memory.
