The Owning

The Owning

A Poem by Doug

I

think I know myself, but I

Am

running scared from

The

truth of my being and the

Darkness

that possesses my soul-

The

Light searches for us in the

Shadow

and finds only that the Evil

Sees

all who walk in its gloom and

Speaks

to all those who will listen and

Hears

all that is said in company or in secret and

Knows

our innermost needs and desires, and

All

live in fear of the Darkness-

The

Light cannot protect you from the

Shadow

because the shadow forever

Understands

the hearts of men and loves

Us

for our flaws as the Light cannot-

You

run from your demons and you

Are

just like me because you are

Afraid

that your Darkness will know

Of

your doubts and your fears and

The

sins you have kept silent, and you dread the day when the

Darkness

will possess you as it has possessed me-

This is an awesome piece! I love your format and how you can read the single lines all together as a statement. That adds so much depth to the piece! Outstanding write.

I quite like your formatting of this, the abrupt line breaks and mix of one-word and longer lines; it slows down the pace, making it kind of menacing in a way...definitely haunting.
Something about it gives me a sense of community, like: this is what it is to be human.

"You
run from your demons and you
Are
just like me because you are
Afraid
that your Darkness will know
Of
your doubts and your fears..."

Nice work.
Thanks for posting it.
