The Lost Airman

The Lost Airman

A Poem by Johann L. Kohler
"

This needs no explanation, except that sometimes I wonder who I was in a past life... Dedicated to the airmen of World War II. 21 Feb 2008

"

i wonder if you'll get my wings
when they find me and box my silver
just another box on your doorstep
leave one candle in the window for me

i wonder if you'll remember to cry
when they bring the telegram to you
just another paper to kindle the fire
leave one memory of last summer for me

i wonder if you'll be in that parade
when the war's over and the crowds cheer
just another photograph never taken
leave one dance in the square for me

i wonder if you'll leave a flower
when they write me off for dead
just another casualty in a lost war
leave one flower at the airfield for me

i wonder if you'll be wearing black
when they raise the flag in silence
just another searchlight in a cold sky
leave one wreath on the cross for me

i wonder if you'll get to read this song
when one side or the other sends me home
just another empty chair in the kitchen
leave one prayer in the night for me

i wonder if you'll go on and love again
when they tell you how i went down fighting
just another one-less formation flying home
leave one candle in the window for me
