Fallout

A Poem by Johann L. Kohler
"

This is probably one of the few poems I'm happy with, in an odd sense of "happy". I guess I don't get metaphorical this often. 18 Nov 2007

"

watch as my heart sinks away into
those shining eyes you blinked
tears out of when the night closed in on you
you loved more than you could see
and now hide my disappearance from me

kiss me your cyanide kisses and tell me
good night and sweet dreams
christen a ship to sail beyond your horizons
set the sails west to the blood-red
and the sun that's falling below it

write my name down in silvered inks
see my face in this pain and cold
watch the spatters sink into the white page
close the cover, seal the ending
let my heart break a million times tonight

toss my ashes out onto this fickle sea
wind and waves washing my past away
turn your eyes away so i don't see you crying
and then watch it all collapse on the water
say goodbye into the wind one last time

wait until you try to sleep the pain away
dream up a fog in your silent night
and let it all close in around you once more
know i still wish i could keep you warm
and then turn away, turn away
