A Tribute To Death

A Tribute To Death

A Poem by Sounak Saha

Upon the face of time, along the bygone years..

Till where all the horizons blend..

From the merging shadows,Death appears..

For severed bonds were there to mend..

I have seen him walk the broken aisles..I have heard his footsteps too...

I know he cleanses the world anew..and in unearthly mockery faintly smiles...

The blood drained skies and the bursting clouds

As colors of men were spilled about...

The bodies lay beneath the tinted shrouds,

And the travels of Death thus took a rout.

He sped across the ragged battlefields..Over the warriors pierced by fear and rage..

Of broken swords and splintered shields..He makes a note in his diary page..

I see him carry the wind in arms...

I see him rest amidst the ocean waves..

Eyeing the fruits of Life, their mortal charms,

Till the time arrives to fill their graves.

You can sense him near, among corpses pale,

Between shattered hopes and gloomy despair.

Stealthily,passing covered in a veil

Which it lifts to present a hollow stare..

You will see him ride the fiercest gale..

Or treading over the fields with frozen dew...

By the mast of a ship, with a broken sail..

Gathering the words,of the fallen crew..

I see him shimmer in the Last Moon's glow,

I see him pierce all the hidden lies..

Atop the mountain of burning snow,

Beneath the darkest shades of the endless skies...
