Rain?A Story by MarlenaI took a step outside to dance in the rain a while....I took a step outside to dance in the rain a while…. I take a timid step out of the house, hands in front of me and feeling the air, chilly. I've just gotten up from my nap, a usual around this house, you know, and I rub my eyes. They burn heavy. My hair is a tangled mess, string, shoelaces, tied up and knotted. I lift my nose to the sky, breathe deep through my mouth and let it out in a huff. I put my hands in my hair and sift my fingers through it till it hurt, and rip them back out. I spread my fingers to the sky like sunlight and ask for warmth, felt the chill of the air on my skin and twirl. I jump and bounce, splashing the puddles on the ground and feeling their dirt-water on my calves, ankles, heels of my bare feet. I wiggle my toes. The screen door smacks against the frame, I stare intently at my toes, I would not look up. I hear your footsteps on the ground, the concrete sidewalk. Your covered feet come up next to mine; you nudge me with your toe. I watch the sunlight reflect on the scuffed leather of your shoes. “Hey…” you put your hand on that spot between my shoulder blades. I look up at you. You wipe my face with your thumb, just under my eyes and the high curve of my cheeks bones. “What are you doing?” I knot my hands on my chest, “…Dancing in the rain.” You raise an eyebrow, look up at the sky. Clear gray-blue; wintersky, just after a shower a little while ago. “Baby, you’re crying.” I sniff my nose and smile a little, “Yeah.” You smile a little too, “Any reason?” “It wasn’t raining.” You stay quiet for a minute, look me over. Sweatpants, tank top, no shoes or jacket. You wrap me in your arms and hold me close; I feel your warmth like sunlight on my skin. “I’m sorry.” You shake your head; kiss the top of mine, “Same. Forget it.” You start to herd me back to the house. We step inside and while I’m drying my feet off, I glance outside. You smile when the rain starts to fall again, hold the door open for me, and we dance together. © 2010 MarlenaAuthor's Note
