Fear of the Dark

Fear of the Dark

A Poem by Marlena
"

Christ, what was that?!

"

Sleep sleep just sleep

there are noises all around me

shadows, too and this darkness is deep

but the creatures I imagine can't possibly be

It's just my room, nothing more

no monsters with yellow eyes,

nothing hiding behind the closet door,

but the shadows hold lies.

No, no, no just shadows

they can't move, they can't speak

they can't scream or shriek--

shadows

that's all they are,

nothing scary here, I swear---

Christ what was that?!

---just relax--- nothing scary over there.

---

Words won't comfort me,

not until I truly see

what the shadows hide

because this strange fear, deep inside,

won't leave me alone, it's strong and stark

I wish I knew how to get rid of this fear of the Dark.

Author's Note

Marlena
Oy....One of the worst nights EVER last night. I had REALLY bad fear of the dark when I was little, like so bad that I slept with the light on for a looooong time. Over active imagination- either way, every once in a while I go back like, five or six years and am suddenly terrified by the dark again. Happened last night. Completely and utterly sucked.

What do you guys think?

Loved the way you expressed the oldest fear to mankind. It will travel with us from cradle to grave and when we think that this fear is conquered, it tends to come back to haunt us once again. Makes a person want to look behind them when reading this. What dark shadow might be peeping over your shoulder, smiling about the power they wield over us in their domain, the dark. You so adequately tell of our often hidden fear......and as you state not of the dark, but the shadows that lurk there.

I really love how you bring me back to my childhood fear of the dark! The chill that ran down my spine was just as real as that bump in the night...You do so well with bringing us all to the places we fear in our minds!
great read, keep up the good work!

We all have something we're afraid of. It's always interesting to read about what makes us shriek or shiver. I liked this as it was dark and trilling to the end.

I loved it. I found it very easy to relate to. I get the same problem as you, i dont know why though. You really showed being afraid of the dark very well. I loved the last stanza the best. Great job.

I really like the poem - it seems to insinuate something beyond the darkness - brilliant!
