About Me( A Chinese girl crazy about English)A Story by Yiling HeYou can call it a brief self-biography. There might be many silly mistakes in this essay. As a non-native speaker, I'd appreciate much if someone out there can correct it a little bit. Thank you! I am an English
major in English Literature. There is about one year left before my graduation
or precisely getting a piece of paper proving my qualification of a bachelor’s
degree after a four-year study. There are only very few lesson scheduled in my
school in the last year. Two periods per week actually amount to none for me considering
the fact that I study English online all by myself instead of attending the
English classes given by some Chinese instructors. By the way, the teachers got
their teaching materials from the Internet themselves. It’s beyond imagination
how boring their lectures are! Why not go to the Internet directly and search
for things that interest you most all by yourself? We all know
that there are a bunch of websites where we can access to the most authentic
English lessons of hugely various catalogs. Besides, I got some special
software with which I can have an even wider option for some blocked websites
such as Facebook or YouTube and many other websites alike. Rest assured, I am
not a cynic who is attempting revenge towards our prosperous society, or a spy
dispatched by some foreign countries. Only god knows how much I love my
country! To familiarize
myself in English environment, I even set all my computer files in the language
of English. I get accustomed to browsing foreign websites anytime I get connected.
I even secretly watched original TV shows with English subtitles from BBC
Channels and many American TV programs which claim to be only available inside
of UK and US. I simply enjoy
exploring online for something new and different. Sometimes I do envy the many
privileges westerners have, but just like every coin has two sides, there are
always bright sides and dark sides everywhere we look. Luckily, I was not born
in Somalia or India or Africa or Syria etc. Sometimes I do wonder the many
high-tech products created by the innovative Americans. It dawns on me soon
that we don’t necessarily have to create them all. We just need to know how to
use them and make our life better. I do appreciate
a saying if you get the best, forget the rest. Nothing or nobody is more
knowledgeable than the World Wide Web. The Internet is the best teacher ever.
So definitely I shall drop out immediately if I can get employed without the
degree constraint. I have great passion for English. Nobody can take that away
from me, not even you! I live in my
school apartment with 5 other roommates. They all know I am the one to turn to
in need of help, because I am always an enthusiastic problem solver. I am
naturally good at comforting and courage-giving. Whether they have trouble with their study,
psychological issues or their computers, I am always a good listener and ready
to give them a hand. I always think that helping others out is helping
yourself, because you never know when you will meet the same problems. Sometimes they
quite marvel at my optimism and a strong will. I simply say my life experiences
shapes who I am today. Indeed, your past makes who you are. I was born in a
poor family, by any convention, the poorest among all the villagers. My father
is a construction worker. I have two siblings, one elder sister who got married
last year and gave birth to an adorable baby girl and a younger brother who is
a junior student in a Chinese university. My mother committed a suicide almost
12 years ago. My father alone raised us three children up. It’s no easy for him
of course. However, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. When god closes a
door, he opens a window for you at the same time. The many hardships I have
gone through only made me appreciate more about life. It doesn’t stop me from
pursuing my dream. It only horns my personality and toughens my heart. It is
actually a huge fortune with which I will try my hardest to make my life better
and better. I survived in the hot competition and made my way to college at
last. In my three
years’ school life, I’ve been working part-time for two years during my
vacations and spare time. I have tried many different jobs. Waitress in a
hotel, tutoring students aged from 6 to 16 English, Chinese, Mathematics,
saleswoman in a bookstore, Teaching Assistant in an International education
school, General Worker in an Electronic Factory, waitress in a Korean
restaurant(Chinese division for sure), etc. I benefited
enormously from those working experiences. They taught me things I can learn no
other ways. It really offered me a lot of good opportunities to improve my
communicative skill with people from all walks of life. I learned the
significance of a strong sense of responsibility. It also led me to dig deeper
into the relation of learning and teaching. I always think teaching is to make
learning funny. My working experience under an International environment really
offered me a great opportunity to expand my horizons. I’ve learned different
cultures from different countries. What’s more, I got to realize the huge gap
in the educational condition between the rich and the poor. Only the rich can
afford such expensive International school, enjoy the best bilingual education.
However, money can’t buy anything. Even those privileged students can have many
of their own problems from their studies and families. Working as a waitress
greatly enhanced my multi-tasking ability and my time management skill. Now you can
gather a general idea about what kind of person I am. Sorry for not being able
to present myself very briefly. Thank you for your attention. Last but not
least, I’d like to share my life motto with you. Life is difficult, yet life is
beautiful. © 2013 Yiling HeAuthor's Note
