Badger Rave

My first attempt at something a bit more different and surreal from what i usually write

I slipped my hand into my pocket

Took out my nights entertainment

Pressed it on my tongue and felt the excitement flow 

As i walked through the streets, i felt it build up in me

Like a wave, a heightened sense of things

I was almost floating, on a cushion of care free air

In the party, the room was thick with smoke and sweaty bodies

The excitement in the air was tangible, the music filled my ears

Then the colours faded, and i felt a cold chill pass over me

The person in front turned his head, looked at me and my heart missed a beat

He was a badger, black and white all over, his gleeful grin clear on his face

I turned my gaze around the room and i saw, they were all badgers

Badgers, dancing blissfully to the music, feeling the ebb and flow of the night

I looked down at my hands, i was not surprised by what i saw

Black and white stripes covered them, i was one of the crowd

So tonight, i was a badger, we were badgers and this was our rave

Author's Note

I wrote this after a conversation went bizarre and i told someone i had badgers living in my head. So, there we go!

Wow, this was both trippy and hilarious, Mr. Plunder! Thanks to your photo there, I immediately thought of the "Badger Badger" animation, although the actual words of the poem reminded me of experiences with certain psychedelics.

It's great, actually! I particularly like these lines:

"In the party, the room was thick with smoke and sweaty bodies

Then the colours faded, and i felt a cold chill pass over me"

The visuals are excellent here, and really depict the scene you're describing. In spite of that, the poem itself is still very silly and bizarre. Perhaps that's why I enjoyed it so much! I'm intrigued, and would love to read more of your poetry.

Thank you very much! This was meant to be a surreal take on what i'm sure many of us have experienced, myself being one of them. It stemmed from a bizarre conversation on here with another poet and i thought i would try my hand at surrealist writing, this being completely different to what i usually do. Glad you liked it though and thanks for the review!

I might be misinterpreting this, but it seems to me that somewhere between walking through the streets and being at the party, "you" unwittingly stepped into an alternate universe!
I especially loved the ability of the character to be so accepting of this new reality, particularly considering that badgers can be pretty damn frightening. But who knows? Maybe they actually make for a better race of intelligent life form. XD
