Two Thousand Years

Two Thousand Years

A Poem by Somber Eyes

I watched as the dark clouds gathered overhead
Blocking the sun, bringing darkness instead
Out with the sun went the warmth and the light
Leaving us cold in the dark of the night

Was it caused by Mother Nature or was it by man?
Our obsession with destruction, I do not understand
We build these machines that can destroy all we see
And we tell ourselves it's to keep us safe from the enemy

Our finger's on the trigger, and we're trembling in fear
With nuclear winter, we won't be here next year
It seems that fear and hate have already sealed our fate
Extinction of our species because we couldn't cohabitate

Money, greed, and power are, to name but a few
The reasons this will happen, let's throw in religion, too
I don't know why people cannot learn to get along
You don't think the way I do, that does not make it wrong

I hope one day we rise up to the potential held within
And realize that when we fight, nobody truly wins
Until that day, the soil will be soaked with blood and tears
The same way it has been for the last two thousand years
