Mr. Popularity

Do you really think that I am stupid?
Do you think that I don't have a brain?
You might do what everybody tells you
But I can't say the same

Do you really fall for product placement?
If someone buys something, will you do the same?
Do you have to follow every new trend?
Well, I don't play that game

I know that I will never be
Mr. Popularity
I will not do something just because it's expected
I don't let others make my choice
I've got my own brain and my own voice
So consider your unspoken demands rejected

If a celebrity endorses
A presidential candidate
It will not sway me in the least
It won't make a difference, not one bit

If someone famous tells me that they
Have a penchant for a certain drink
It won't affect my decision making
It will not change the way I think

I know that I will never be
Mr. Popularity
I refuse to follow any trends
I'll look at what there is to see
Then make the right choice for me
And it won't matter who that choice offends

When I look everywhere around me
And I see people with a NOOK
I just laugh and I shake my head
As I turn another page in my book

I'm writing these words with my favorite pen
But it's name, I will not write down
I won't be a mouthpiece for somebody else
I will not be a company's marketing clown

I know that I will never be
Mr. Popularity
My strengths of will and self are just too great
I suggest you look inside
Beyond your superficial pride
And learn to think for yourself before it's too late
