Leave the Porch Light On

Leave the Porch Light On

A Poem by Somber Eyes
"

Something that came to me after watching the movie "What A Girl Wants".

"
The day we met, I thought it was love at first sight
We spent every moment together, from morning until night
And every night when we said our goodbyes
We'd spend eternity looking into each other's eyes

I thought we were the perfect team
I thought we shared a common dream
But then it fell apart one day
You said you had to go away

I don't know why you had to leave
I don't know where you went
But it killed my fantasy
And all my merriment
It left me with a broken heart
And bruised beyond all words
I hope someday you understand
Just how much it hurt

It was the following year that our little girl was born
I love her dearly, with all my heart, but it left me forlorn
I still loved you and I knew that one day she would ask
"Why is daddy never here, and is he coming back"

Every year on her birthday
I dreaded the words she would say
"I wish for daddy to appear"
"I wish that he was living here"

I don't know why you had to leave
I don't know where you went
I don't know where you ran off to
Or where your heart was sent
But I still love you more than ever
You've been missing for too long
So until you come back to us
I'll leave the porch light on

Someday, I hope to finally see
Why you ran away from me
Every night that you've been gone
I've left the porch light on

Years go by and still we don't hear one word from you
It breaks my heart, and I can clearly see it breaks her's, too
If you don't love me, that's okay, but what about our little girl
If you just told her you loved her, it would mean the world

Every birthday is the same
She makes a wish and whispers your name
And every year, she's disappointed
Please tell me, what was it we did

Please tell me why you had to leave
And why you left so fast
I thought we loved each other
But I guess it didn't last
I still love you more than you could know
So until you're back in my arms
I'll keep your picture beside my bed
And I'll leave the porch light on

I don't know if you're coming back
Sixteen years, you have been gone
But you'll always have a place in my heart
So I'll leave the porch light on

Your daughter wants to know her father
So please come back where you belong
We both hope to see you soon
So we'll leave the porch light on
