Spirits In The Fire

A song that I have written in the Country/Rock genre.

I had a fight with the bottle

And the bottle won.

I was knocked down flat on my back

Before the fight had even begun.

I tried to turn loose of the bottle

But the bottle wouldn’t turn loose of me

And that big glass bottle with the black label

Was as far as I could see.

 

My daddy rode that bull

When he was only twenty-three

And it took him for one hell of a ride

Before it finally took him from me.

And as I sit here in front of the fire

With a glass of whiskey in my hand

I hear his voice come through the flames

Warning me to take my stand:

 

There are spirits in the fire

Fire in the water,

But not enough in the bottle

To quench a man’s thirst.

Don’t grab that bull by the horns, son,

Because that bull eventually wins.

You’ve gotta’ break that bottle

Before that bottle breaks you first.

 

My momma was a Christian lady,

She always tried to teach me wrong from right.

And I know it broke her heart every time

She heard me stagger in each night.

She tried to show me love and understanding

Even though daddy had passed on long before.

Then when she finally ran out of patience

She showed me the door.

 

I lived from drink to drink

And staggered from bar to bar.

Then I realized one lonely night

I was never gonna’ get very far.

But I couldn’t seem to help myself

As I sat with my bottle in front of the fire

And I heard daddy’s voice in the flames again

As the heat rose higher and higher.

 

There are spirits in the fire

Fire in the water

But not enough in the bottle
