Subtle Whispers

Subtle Whispers

A Poem by T.A.Rogers
"

Subtle Whispers

"

Subtle whispers, the devil did speak

Throughout the days, from week to week.

Charmed, though I was but, wary, indeed

Of consumption in spirit by evil's greed.

A truth I hear, though a lie he tells

Soon vexed am I by evil's spell.

"Away with you," I say to him

"Your sincerity feigned, your eternal din."

A warming smile he gave upon baring fangs.

My spirit spasmed in a woeful pang.

Yet epiphany blossomed in my soul

For I realized the true nature of my foe.

Though underlying ferocity barely contained

In clever ruses and solemnity feigned

No authority has he but what I allocate

So fear I dismiss for spiritual sake.

Normally, I'm not a big fan of form. Lately, I've begun to see a technique some writers exhibit (yourself included) that is incredibly skillful, though I can't identify what that factor is whatsoever. So I can't tell you what exactly I like about this poem. I think the content of the poem, the way the words and rhymes led into each other so fluidly, is remarkable and suitable, since this 'old' style was indeed from a time which widely dictated theology. Word choice and use of punctuation is tactful, I think, layering each idea with little confusion and better clarity. I think this is an impressive construction, symphonic and technical. I really enjoyed the read.
