RIGHT IS NOT GOOD

When I was a little child

I was taught to always do right

Though I also learnt to do wrong

Still, I knew wrong was not right

To me, all that was good was right

And right births the common good

 

Then I grew some more

I discovered to do right was still good

But not always for the common good

To do right might turn friends away

And to stand right was to stand alone

I started to accept the simple truth

That right might be different from good

 

Yet, a little more I have grown

I have seen the fruits of right choices

And tasted the fruits of good choices

I know good is for the common good

And right is for the ultimate good

Our emotions drive us to do good

And principles compel us to do right

 

 

Now I have lived some decades,

I discovered in life also, that;

As much as principles must guide our choices

So also should emotions balance them.

But we do not seem to know to balance

As we let emotions get in the way of right

And stick principles in the face of good

Whatever the case may be, I know

Right and good seldom walk together  

On same side of the road.
