Run

Run

A Poem by Nurhanne Hassan

You close your eyes
And you run
Like nothing ever existed, exists or ever will
Like your parents don't keep you on a dog's leash
Like your heart isn't splintered from inside out
And the cracks spread through your body like a sporadic earthquake
Like the dresses you wear are lies
Because you're not a f*****g princess
You are a warrior
At least that's what you want to be
But you can't anyways
So you just run away
From this fact too
Run like the people you love aren't away
As if they're chasing you, hunting you down
Because they love you
Not because you stole their boyfriends
Run as if your sneakers are brand new Nike's
Not just hand-me-downs from dad fueled by a lack of bravery
Run as if religious debacles get left behind
As if everyone turns into John Lennon and start kissing each other
Run like what you write actually matters
More than how you look like
Run like your demons can't catch up with you
Even though they manifested you
Every single molecule.
Run till your books come true
Till Justin Bieber is Joan Jett
Till nobody good is dead
Till dawn and dusk unite
Till your dying star shines bright
Till you black out
Till your troubles work themselves out
Till tomorrow or forever
Till a day when it gets better.
