big table

big table

A Poem by Nurhanne Hassan

There was once this big table
With lots and lots of chairs
It started out with my chair
And people kept filing in
Some of them chatted animatedly
Others wrote pain on papers and hurled them at me
A few were listening to me
The rest were too far off from my chair for me to see
Time passed and one by one
They started filing out
Some of them left their chairs
Leaving me in their company
Others took theirs with them
As if they never were
I jerked my head up to look around
No one was to be found
I was surrounded by little chairs and lots of paper
Only one was unfolded
I opened it and there it was
The sentence that was everything
'You're all alone'
Now I have all the time to let this sink in
I have all the time with the chairs
wondering if I ever left one on somebody else's table.

This poem is very powerful, I loved it! The purpose to portray loneliness and the tone make a good combination here. However if you read it out loud the rhythm sometimes breaks a bit, if you could fix that then it will be perfect! However, I must confess I constantly mess that up in my own poems, so perhaps I just don't know :p

I love the metaphor...and this poem screams of loneliness. I like how some people took there chairs while others left them...like some vanished with out a trace while others left scars. This poem is full of emotion and it is very well executed. Great write!
