Behind the Mask

Behind the Mask

A Chapter by Soccerstar55

Poor Kaden. I feel bad for him. Having to be the last person to see a victim alive can be horrible. Or incredibly genius. A smirk played on my face. It had to be genius it was my idea after all. I stood there in the dark musty janitors closet, with the door slightly cracked, watching. Kaden just went back to the classroom, muttering something I didn't quite catch. When he mentioned the word Carmella, my ears perked up. I let out a small snicker. I knew exactly what was his deal. Carmella sent him a text to get her notebook from the history classroom. He looked my way, my heart skipped a beat. In my mind I was hoping he just went into the classroom already. He continued walking but abruptly stopped. There was something shimmering on the floor. Kaden bent down to pick it up, examined it closely, then put it in his back pocket. Yes, he took the bait. The plan was working just like I hoped. He walked to the classroom door and turned the doorknob ever so slowly. When he finally disappeared inside the room, I waited patiently, counting back from ten. 9...8...7...6...5...4...3...2...1. When I reached zero, there was a loud shriek that could have alarmed the entire town. Perfect. I slid out of the closet just as the hallway was flooding with curious onlookers. The screaming blared throughout the hallway, making some cover their ears. I could hear the crowd was abuzz with gossip on the screaming and stupid theories about what was happening. Idiots. Worst thing about this is Im stuck with them for another year. The sound of high heels slamming against the linoleum floor diverted my attention for a moment. Ms. Cullen was charging down the hall with a navy blazer and pearl earrings dangling from her ears. Her blonde hair was in a tight bun. She had a petite form like she spent the past two years starving herself to get the look. It wasn't working cause if she knew what was going on with mr. Cullen. Hehe that will be saved for another time. Ms.Cullen held a radio up to her lips and spoke something about the situation. In a horror movie, I would be the notorious killer who would be admiring her work. It's a dream come true. Ms. Cullen pushed her way through the crowd and stepped inside the classroom. For a minute the gossip died down around me, except for a few murmurs. When ms.Cullen stepped into the hallway, her pasty skin turning a muck green. In her arms was a shivering Kaden. His eyes were red and puffy from crying. Ms. Cullen whispered something in Kaden's ear. He nodded and walked with her down the hall. I almost felt bad for him. Almost. Teachers were ushering the other students to go back to their classrooms. No one really budged until Principal Rodgers came charging down the hall. Behind him were several men blue jackets with a large stretcher in tow. Across their backs in bold white letters: EMT. I heard a few gasps behind me as the EMT walked down the hall and into the room. For a moment it seemed like it would be an eternity for them to come back out. Then, Mr. Rodgers came out the room, his hands running through his hair. His face turned red like he was frustrated. The EMT walked out the classroom with the stretcher. A black sleek bag was placed on top of the stretcher. Now there were horrified gasps. People were loud with gossip. Some covered their mouths and looked close to being on the verge if tears. Others had confused and uncomfortable looks on their faces. It was official now. Two of Melody Hills' girls were dead. That's what they get for knowing too much. I watched with the other students as the stretcher turned the corner. It looks like Candy's getting a free ride to the morgue. I hope she has a blast. The hallway was finally clearing out. I was heading back to my classroom when I locked eyes with Emilia. There was a a long pause. I noticed her face was drained of all color. I bet a sickening knot was forming in the pit of her stomach right now. She can thank me later for getting rid of the problem. And I know just the price she can pay.
