Fire and Water Don't MixA Chapter by Brooklyn
The left wall had exploded.
There was dust and debris falling everywhere. I could hear coughs and sneezes around me. I could feel Scarlett grip my hand and I gave her a reassuring squeeze. After the dust settled, I rubbed the dust out of my eyes and could finally see. It was the most scariest creature I have ever seen. It was a fiery tornado only ten times worst. I felt it's heat radiating off of itself. It was the color of lava and burned anything near it. Two glowing black eyes were the only human-like feature and it seemed to watch our every move. "Scarlett and Audrey get behind my desk!" Mr. Jones said, urgently. We didn't need to be told twice. But, even behind the desk I could still feel it's heat. " I don't think this is mom and dad's idea of safe." Said Scarlett. " I don't think so, either" I replied. I could shouts coming from Zoe and Mr. Jones. There seemed to be a twanging sound every second and the sound of water and lava meeting. Debris and fire flew everywhere. Finally, curiosity won and I took a peek. I gasped. I didn't gasp because Zoe had an ice-like bow in her hand and every time she pulled the string an arrow was already notched. Or because Zoe was swaying and didn't look like she could even stand straight. Or because the creature seemed to grow. Or because Zoe had burns all over her. I gasped because Mr. Edward Jones was just standing there. He stood some feet behind Zoe, watching with a grim face. His hands were clasped behind his back and didn't seem in any hurry to help Zoe. "Help her!" I screamed at him. His face snapped towards my direction. "Get down!" I couldn't do that. Scarlett was yanking at my shirt and whispering at me to stop looking and that I'll get hurt. But, I couldn't do that. Zoe didn't look like she was winning and the creature seemed to get bigger. Then something happened. I didn't know what came over. It was like someone had taken control of my body. I got in front of the desk and crouched. My right palm was pressed to the ground. I ignored the pulsing heat. Scarlett and Mr. Jones were both screaming at me to get behind the desk, but I turned a deaf ear. I concentrated on the ground beneath me. I could feel roots and the soil. Then I turned my gaze towards the creature. Zoe was looking worse and didn't seem like she could stand much more. I concentrated entirely on the creature. I felt the strong roots underneath him. It was like talking to the roots Grow, I told them. Grow as tall as you can. Roots grew at alarming speeds around the monster. They weaved around and around it. In record speed the monster was trapped beneath woven roots. I ignored the gasps around me and kept concentrating. I was covered in a layer of sweat and felt like passing out. But, I didn't. I made my right hands into a fist and the cage around the monster pressed down. The harder I squeezed, the more the roots pressed down. Until. Poof. The monster was killed and the roots hid back into the depths of the ground. The last sound I heard before passing out was Scarlett calling my name. © 2017 BrooklynAuthor's Note
