The Wandering Thief
A short story written by Adam M. Snow
I am alone, the air is dank and
cold; my hunger is unbearable. They spat on me for the person I am, a peasant.
At times I want to die, but utmost I want to live, but how I do so, they mark
me as a criminal; in other words, I steal to survive. I know it’s wrong, I feel
it’s the only way for me to keep on living. My name is Johnny; perhaps I should
just give that name up, being as it may these days, I am not worthy of a name.
I just peaked twelve; I am an orphan, I lost my parents seven years ago. They
got sick; my mother was the first to die. I felt as if it hurt my father, he
blamed himself and drank; he began to beat me. He died eight months later. I’ve
been on my own ever since and everyday I get closer to death. This is my story.
I hope you enjoyed your tease, the rest of this story is coming soon.
Taken place in 1882; this story follows an orphan child by the name of Johnny, as he tells his story of him stealing to survive, and how he is ridiculed for being a peasant and with no home to go to, how he sleeps on the treacherous streets.

I adore the set up for this. It's been such a long time since I've read a good story based in the 1800s. I look forward to reading more. Especially with this tone.
