The Darkness

The Darkness

A Poem by Andromeda
"

ehhhhhhh...influenced by Batman

"

What’s

So terrifying about the Dark?

He asked as he

Huddled

Tighter into the covers.

What

Is it that haunts Nightmares?

What

Makes them

Crawl across your skin

And leave marks

That stay

Even when you wake up?

He wondered

As he dared not

Close his eyes

Lest

He slip into

Unwanted dreams.

He asked and heard no answer,

Then

Trembled

As he asked again,

Pleaded into the Night—

What,

He asked,

Is it that

Drowns me in fright?

That I am alive,

Whispered the Darkness back,

That I am more

And I am mystery.

It’s me,

Whispered the Darkness back,

It’s me

That breathes your Nightmares.

Dark and lovely. I like it.

Love it. Especially this part:

"That I am alive,

Whispered the Darkness back,

That I am more

And I am mystery."

I would either leave off that last stanza or perhaps put more questions from the character in the bed before stating that one. It throws off the whole flow when you get there. That or incorporate it into the stanza I quoted above. The "Whispered the Darkness back" makes it sound redundant or that there are two darknesses answering. Anyway, like the rest of it.

Ooh, this gave me the chills. Nice read.
