Shelf Space

Shelf Space

A Poem by Andromeda

Where Paradise lived

Was  the shelf space

Where she stocked

The dialogue from the day.

Where Paradise lived

Kept getting smaller and smaller,

Shrinking like an old cotton shirt,

Shrinking like the space before nightfall.

Where Paradise lived—

She had no secret storage,

No key to ask for more,

And the space kept getting

Smaller and smaller

As she shoved

White sands and blue skies

Out the door.

Where Paradise lived

She longed to go back,

But all the colors had

Shifted to psychadelic,

And nothing was

Clean air and natural

Where Paradise lived,

Polluted like the

Chemical plant that

Lived outside her dreams.

And the shelf space kept

Getting smaller

Where Paradise lived.
