Cash in the Bag

Cash in the Bag

A Poem by Andromeda
"

"

She was role-playing

The cash in the bag,

Stuffed in the corner of his car,

Kissing words out to the air—

Pretty red nails

On the radio dial,

Turning it up as loud as it would go,

And waiting for the sirens

Behind them to expire;

Pretty pair of

Gold-gleaming eyes

Watching his hand upon the wheel—

                Smiling,

                They were

                Role-playing Bonnie and Clyde,

And her mother

Always told her

Red nail polish

Was too strong for a

Small-county girl,

And little white dresses

Simply just don’t belong—

Well,

                She glances behind

Through the barrel of a .45,

Slides her tongue around her teeth,

                And laughs,

                Proud to be

Role-playing the cash in the bag, the fast-driving gang,

                Bonnie and Clyde.
