The Last Letter

The Last Letter

A Poem by Andromeda
"

...

"

I read all your letters yesterday—

Stacked them in a pile and

Read them

            One

            By

            One—

Didn’t shed a tear until they were all done,

Until I’d read the very last one:

The very last word from you that

I’ll ever read—

Read over and over again.

Ironically,

You had written:

“If this is the very last letter,

The very last thing I say,

Love me forever,

But don’t forget to move on.”

Sometimes I think you knew—

Wonder if you dreamed it,

Foresaw your fate the night before.

I just wish

I hadn’t had to lose you to this war.

I just wish

For another letter at my door—

Just one more

And then another more

And then you back.

“Love me forever,”

You said—

Did you think I had a choice?

I’ll read your letters again tonight—

Stack them up in a

Tender pile

And

Read them

            One

            By

            One,

Crying when I know

The last letter from you has come.

And you expect me

To

Move on?

How?

You told an epic story in a very succinct way. Very emotional and told with that utter sense of fate. I love it.

Wow. I love this. The rhyme is great, and I love the story.

Oh simply beautiful. I could feel your pain and love with each line. Wonderfully written. Great job.
