Chapter 13

I woke up the next morning, gasping, like I'd been the one running. But no, I was still in my own bed. Orangeheart lay beside me, her head on her paws. At least she seemed peaceful. I was ready for school in about thirty minutes. Orangeheart was awake and waiting at the door. She mewed at me, her ears perked up. I picked her up and held her for a moment, then set her back down and patted her head.
"I'll be home soon, Orangeheart. Just school today. I've got work to do, so I won't be going anywhere after" I said, smiling.
She looked up at me and meowed contentedly, seeming to understand. I grabbed my bag and flute and headed out the door. John was already waiting with Jenna, Susan, and Jake.
"Good morning, Sam" Susan said. Obviously she didn't remember or had gotten over what had happened the night before.
"Good morning" I replied.
"Have you forgotten something, Sam?" Jenna asked.
"Not that I'm aware of, why?"
"We start our state testing today" Jake groaned.
"Are you serious!? I'm not prepared for this thing!" I yelped, surprised.
"None of us are" Jenna answered.
"I am" John said.
"You're the only one" Susan stated.
"Well... Let's get this over with then" Jake said.
I nodded. John laughed and pulled out.
"You all gonna fail?"
"Yes" we said in unison.
