Medusa ~ Sonnet

Medusa ~ Sonnet

A Poem by SleeplessVolcano

Content am I to gaze upon your face
it is a map of love I want to read
my clumsy fingers seek to slowly trace
those sun-kissed tears the gods have so decreed.

My ragged face collide with your soft cheek
I fear my thorny self may scratch your soul
but your tired, glowing eyes allow a peek
two glowing hazel diamonds take their toll.

Your jasmine lips revive my shaken frame
no words they speak while giving life to mine
you taste like stars while my lips call your name
will our love in Athena's temple dine?

"Poseidon's folly's now your lot" she cried
the hero's skin froze hard and petrified.

AAAaaahhh! A Gorgon! Medusa got raped by her husband, Poseidon, for worshiping in Athena's temple. Athena, strangely,if you ask me, decided that a fit punishment for this, um, offense was to be transformed into a loathsome creature with live, venomous snakes for hair. You can bet she didn't brush out THAT mess. Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase 'permanent wave'. what with all those live snakes forever undulating, and...oh, forget it. Just don't look into her eyes, whatever you do...

Very well done sonnet, one of the toughest of the poetic forms to master. I know nothing about meter, so I don't talk about it. Your rhyme & rhythm feel impeccable, tho. Your imagery is powerful & intense, but I felt a little letdown when I didn't get the feeling of SNAKES from your poem or your imagery. To me, the main reason to use the name "Medusa" is to somehow incorporate her having snakes for hair, paying homage to the myth. Your poem is well done except for this seeming omission (((HUGS))) fondly, Margie

I always feel rather clumsy and oafish reviewing sonnets, which im pretty sure is something to do with a little jealousy on my part, but thid is so impressive in flow, language and structure, that I can't help but hear it with the voice of an actor, softly lifting and lilting in regret.
Always a good sign :)
It also has a feel of an extended pause at the end, leaving an almost echo to be pondered.
Not an expert, but love it.

Mmmm .... I had to Google her story ..
So if I understand correctly... athena turned her into monster Because she was beautiful?
Or Bec of the other guy the sea god...
Mmmm what's her fault in that isn't it.. ( you making me think too much)

I love the way you have captured the soft echo of his soul... and the end with a twist.. :)
Mostly that's what happens...

The pic is mesmerising too... :)
