I sorry, it is rather cruel...the expression, "a canary in a coal mine" today refers to something or someone warning one of impending danger, though back in the day, when gases built up in coal mines, they used poor canaries in cages.....if they don't hear singing, then, well, it's best not to send the miners down....:(
