Runaway sunset

The sun is fading away
Slowly, into darkness
Pink fights with peach
Stealing prodigal rays of light
Until their squabbles cease
And the king of dusk
Reluctantly abdicates
To the rulers of grays and blacks
Bastions of night light
Share their sparkling joy
Before they too give up the fight
And run and hide
Behind overweight clouds
All light is gone now
Peaceful darkness
Hugs the earth.

I like the imagery of different coloured clouds squabbling! And also the picture of 'peaceful darkness' hugging the earth. Lovely observation of a lovely natural event.

i can watch sunsets from our back deck ...it kind of rolls to a settled spot behind the distant mountain ..then just sits there for a while ...peaking ;) the light takes forever to leave ...
your poem leaves me feeling that peace and quiet of night ... i want to keep going with stars and moon coming out ;) defeating the clouds but the mood you create is comforting in its night time darkness ... we have had several nights of complete darkness lately as clouds have knocked the lights out .. its a peaceful but ominous quiet that i feel
