The idol of poetry

The idol of poetry

A Poem by SleeplessVolcano
"

Painted into a corner by my own words.....

"

I made a covenant with my eyes this morning
Not to dabble in poetic musings,
Yet the pragmatic politician within -
Yes, that personality behind the third door on the right
Convinced me that if I delete all reference
To romance and love,
And just focus on divine things above,
There would be no potential temptations,
For all others would see my holy intentions.
So sucker that I am for a good argument,
I gave in, and expressed my frustration,
To the gates of heaven,
Only to succumb to my poetry obsession -
I am just faking a religious experience,
While being in love with poetic expression.

How often so many folks do the faking thing!Only most people accept their own lies as truth how profound.Your rhythm is good and flows nicely

why am i thinking of Cat Stevens with this poem...who then became yosef islam and is not Cat again.
denying his music, his inner soul for some outer one...and then taking back his poetic expression.

there is that political side to us poets, isn't there...the one who lobbies to let the feelings out with the pen or the banging of the keys.

really like this piece, Sleepless.

Enigmatic, thoughtful and a joy to read. I kept going back to "that personality behind the third door on the right". Such an interesting phrase, on one hand it's very ambiguous "personality" but then so specific, behind the third door on the right. Very cool approach, thank you!

do you fight the urge to breathe, to think, to feel, to live...?
Then why engage in the futility of the poet who wishes to avoid painting with words?

Truly loved the phrase - "I am just faking a religious experience" - we can fool ourselves all of the time and others some of the time but God - none of the time lol

Your writing appeals to me very much SV. :)
