They Called it an EquationA Poem by Tracy SladeWhat if you life could be plugged into a simple equation? Would life lose all the mystery and excitement?
They Called it an Equation It was an equation One that was never to be solved They, and by they I mean those
powers that be, the one percent the bourgeoisie Whatever label seems to stick Call it the million dollar
problem Knowing full well it would never
be solved They poured money from rich
donors, entire countries Sent in the people with all the
right titles Even some who didn’t and never
reached any closer to the answer They wanted it in some nice neat
little series of numbers and letters They could have kids memorizing
as early as kindergarten Plug yourself in and you knew Exactly who you would fall in
love with How much money you would make And of course where you would go
when you died Einstein spent years on this The Bible summed it up in far too
many pages Plato said don’t bother But they did They struggled, cursed, spent
countless hours in the lab Until you became a single number
The high numbers would go to
college Receive all the praise from the
time they were conceived While the lower ones would make
up the bottom of the pyramid The part easiest to ignore Knowing your number from birth Would eliminate so much time Figuring out silly notions that
don’t really matter Such as who you are Or worry about finding love No need to fight for your position Its handed to you on a silver
platter Or it hits you
from behind, forcing you face down into the dirt Those were the
voices, or single voice if that makes it easier to think about What with that notion of big brother and all They said trust
us we know best We want it all
to be easier They called it
an equation, promising hope and freedom Freedom from
choice, freedom from decisions, freedom from free will The freedom to
be whoever you wanted As long as they
picked it out for you
