Freedom?

Freedom?

A Poem by Sunny Skye

The American dream?
Still haven't lived it
Freedom of speech?
Still haven't spoken it

A free country with so many restrictions
Locks us in with nothing to say
We protest and get caught up
We wake up in a jail cell with no memories
Wondering what happened to freedom

We walk into school and can't express our minds
No symbols, no words, no colors
we are forced to fit in or sit out
To act like the others or not at all
they tell us to be different but when we are
We are forced to stop

We see people do wrong
And we put no stop to it
We should put a stop to this
Break the handcuffs and break free

Throw away the mask and be what we want to be
Unmute and say what we think
Walk through the fog
And search for the truth

Freedom has been blocked and is just writing on papers
To sell an unreal American dream

Your generation had a hard road. Many great President set-up rules. Both Obama and Bush did some bad things. Bush's allowed the government to be able to take any land and unprotected the land made safe by the great President Teddy Roosevelt. Obama gave police the right to arrest without reason. Your poem is true. Things must change or freedom will be a myth. Thank you for the outstanding poem.

Even though I'm Canadian, the despondency in these sentiments know no borders...freedom is a myth really...we talk about it and try to convince ourselves that we have it, but we're never free of the governments and authorities that regulate us and essentially define our lives for us...there is little wiggle room for freedom as we like to define it...anyways I'm not a philosopher but I did want to demonstrate how much this piece spoke to me :)

This is really amazing. I've always thought the same things...
"Break the handcuffs and break free." That's my favorite line.
