A Poem by SkinlessFrank

a colleague once

related

that he sensed

a touch of autism

in me

all of us

are different

and so I wondered

about that

it’s true that

my lover has often

been surprised

that i don’t know

something seemingly

obvious like

who oj simpson is

or that she finds me wearing

socks of different colours

and i don’t often know

what day it is

and i’m happy

alone in the woods

or garden

not notice the passing

of hours

or years

i can laugh out loud

at a sudden thought

in the quiet of the night

but this is just how

some people are

isn’t it?

My kids and I all wear mismatched socks. Haha. I have noticed that some people find it annoying but I don’t really think about it. I wonder why some people feel they need to comment on people’s supposed differences. What the purpose is. I think it is uncomfortable for some people to be around people whose behavior they cannot predict or immediately relate to. I also think it’s insensitive to label others. Especially because sometimes these labels create space for mistreatment or bias. Often unconscious bias.

It’s interesting how we can see ourselves and not really think too much about how we appear outside ourselves or feel any need to scrutinize our actions or choices. But then we meet others in moments where they can make our entire structure of self feel like something to be examined or hyper aware of, in some cases even ashamed of.

When I meet people who are different than me I think how interesting they are. I would like to live in a world where diversity (as serah said) is something we take joy - pleasure in encountering. Just as the natural world offers such variety and interest in difference and stokes our curiosity. I’d love to live in a world where curiosity was one of the most admired traits we could possess.

Love you, Ed. I miss you.
~ ohhhhhhhhhhhh... ~ you're an out and out genius, maestro d. ... and i cannot begin to tell you how much i relate to this piece... especially with regard to the passage of time (hours and years) and laughing out loud like that... ~ i love this piece... and i say this while laughing (and not just giggling) in the quiet of the afternoon... hahahaha... this is such a perfect response to the type of people who don't get diversity... :D
