A worn-out memory

A worn-out memory

A Poem by Enigma

A restless sigh,

Lingering in the air and in my thoughts,

Floating among the fragments,

Of a worn out memory.

I create you, step by step, in my mind;

A hand holding mine,

Captive, like my heart is,

Limp and warm, they lie in a timeless embrace;

Like us.

Huddled against the cold outside,

Caught up in a brown velvet trap of cloth,

Gazing aimlessly ahead,

Scattering the precious moments in thin air.

We breathe.

We dream.

We love.

And in one silent point of time,

Hidden somewhere in its intricate tapestry,

Frozen and faded,

I remember a lifetime spent with you.

It is, but, a worn out memory,

Losing itself in the surging tides of time.

But I discover us,

In the tiny droplets that remain,

And I dwell upon these collected bits of thought;

Recreating the face I know so well.

Soften your edges, Time,

Cease being so ruthless in your walk,

Spare a few gems of the past.

If all must end that has been well,

Then let this memory last a bit longer;

Let me travel back to that perfect moment one more time,

And relive this dying memory.

Before you wipe my consciousness clean,

Let me remember it all again...

This part of the poem just touched me. It's a very great piece, so very powerful and emotional to read. I reread it a couple of times and I loved it more and more every single time. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Interesting piece, I think the first stanza would stand up well just on it's own... but with the last two lines of the last stanza added to it...

"... I remember a lifetime spent with you,
but before you wipe my consciousness clean,
let me remember it all again".

Super experiment!... good to see.

This poem touched me to my core. I too have worn out memories that I am afraid of losing forever. The lose of memories is both kind and cruel, allowing us to move on in life, yet leaving us with the wish to relive it all one more time.

I sat watch with a friend - just this last november. She was quite a person... It became the ultimate "He said, she said..." and at the end - dissolution. We shared the creation of the world she was "becoming". At sunrise the silence was total... and the darkness complete.

I still watch the sun rise...
