Amber's Challenge

Amber's Challenge

A Chapter by Enigma
"

Amber is set out to defeat me...

"

The next day was quite happening. With teachers taking unexpected leaves and the Sun enjoying his break behind the grey clouds, the day was meant to be enjoyed.

Most of the students were absent that day because of the MT (major test) of math. And later, they truly regretted their action because noticing the less number of students, the teacher the cancelled the test for three days.

I took the second from the last seat near the window and had a great time looking outside to the ground and feeling the cool wind brush past me.

“Hey!” somebody said. I thought that the word wasn’t addressed to me so I didn’t reply. I kept my eyes closed and sat there facing the open window relishing every second.

Thump! A huge eraser landed on my head.

I turned around and opened my eyes as if I had woken from a dream.

“Welcome back to earth, sleeping beauty.” He said sitting next to me.

“Damn you, Arun” I replied trying to sound angry, irritated and sleepy at the same time.

“You’re welcome!” he said in a very cheesy kind of voice.

“What do you want?” I finally let go of my sleep and stared at his face. I tried my best but I didn’t sound angry at all.

“Just confirming the fact that you’re not backing out.”

“From what?” I asked.

“The break-in!” he said as-a-matter-of-factly.

“I thought you were all joking” I told him and pushed myself into a more comfortable position.

“BREAKING NEWS: We were dead serious” he replied with a look of irritation in his eyes.

“You guys are mad for doing this. Breaking into school!”

“It’ll be fun…”

“What if you get caught? Did you ever give it a thought? You all can get expelled. And thank you very much, I like my school and am not planning on moving out to some other.”

“But…”

“There are so many things that can go wrong and….”

“May I interrupt?” somebody said from behind.

“No! You can’t!” I yelled without looking back.

“But I will” saying this, the person put her hand over my mouth and revealed her face.

“Cut it out Amber” I said in a muffled tone.

She removed her hand and took a seat in front of us.

Sooner, Priya also arrived.

“Siya is a chicken. She’s not coming to our mission” Amber declared. And next I know is that all three of them started chanting it as of they were heading a parade.

“FINE!” I yelled at them all.

“YAY!!” they all shouted together

I got up and started towards the door.

“So, I’ll mail you the timings today. Ok?” Arun said, still sitting.

“But why?” I replied with a mischievous grin and continued walking.

“You have to come!” Amber raced ahead and blocked my way.

“Make me!” I said with a stern and yet funny smile.

“If you don’t come, I’ll tell Dhruv that you like him.” She threatened me.

“And being an idiot, he’ll believe you. Yeah! Right.” I told her.

“So you think that he won’t believe me?”

“Let’s have a deal’, I said suppressing a laughter. “You tell him that I like him and I’ll tell him that I don’t. The one he believes, wins. The loser has to obey the winner. Deal?” I said it all in one breath and waited for her to reply.

“Amber has not lost a single bet yet” Priya chimed in.

“Well, there’s someone she’s going to lose to” I said still staring at Amber.

“And just when I thought you were a shy and a timid girl…”

she didn’t complete the sentence and slowly walked away.

After the afternoon prayer, I made my way to the school gate and headed home, furiously planning on what to say to Dhruv that is good enough to tackle Amber’s talks. There were chances the he would believe her because she was very good at talking people into doing things she wants them to do or believe. Funny thing, her words rarely had any effect on me.

I reached home at an aero plane’s speed and didn’t realize it until finally my legs started paining.

‘Plan A’ I said to myself as I picked up the phone and dialed Dhruv’s number.

“Hmm…busy at this time of the day” I said to myself loudly. After all, I was alone in the house.

“Oh! Man! Amber’s already talking to him!” I said in disbelief.

I frantically started pacing here and there. I was not worried that I’d lose but rather about what she’s going to tell him.

“Got it!”

I raced up to my room. Pulled out my fresh pair of clothes and raced down again. After having a small lunch of instant noodles and some mango juice, I rushed outside the house.

“Amber! You can never beat this” I smiled as I locked the door and started towards Dhruv’s house.

Hope it was as interesting as the last chapter. I wrote it the second time and well, it got better that way. Don't worry, the real action isn't far away...

I wonder what Siya is getting into. Fast moving still and holding my interest.
I also wonder how wise she is in making such a bet! Things like that have a habit of backfiring.

Still guess we'll soon find out.

As a reminder, it is always good to rwite , and check your work, the re- write again if it needs it. You can always improve.

I was wondering...has all this actually happened in your school? And are these your real friends? Anyway, I liked your story, you keep it going really exciting...hope you write the next few chapters, I can't wait to read them!

Yes, you keep the interest going well. Characters interact nicely, makes me wonder if you are using real school friends to fill the rolls. Some of the dialogue I was unsure about, but I think, more because I'm out of touch with trends in phraseology.

Well written, another excellent chapter.
