Making DecisionsA Chapter by Sivgat Hasan
So there we were-safe, surrounded by armed combatants, led by a just woman. We felt safe and guarded. But we thought about our parents, our friends, our loved ones. We were very young back then but even so, we knew that we had to contribute. We felt the urge to go out there and help those people who did not know of the existence of such a camp. It was a crazy thought, but it felt so right. Thousands of helpless countrymen of ours were out there. Correction- tens of thousands! They needed our aid. And we needed them safe. Seemed like humanity was broken. Seemed like humanity was shattered.
I woke up rather early the next day of my stay in the outpost. I checked my watch (it was still working) and it said '4:30'. It was time to pray. I was a Muslim and for me, it was time to pray. Me and my friends, we were given to stay in a small room inside a moderately big apartment. There were many others living with us in that building. Only a few buildings made up that outpost. But the walls kept the evil outside. I woke up, the room was dark and the sun hadn't risen yet. I washed my face and brushed my teeth (yes I remembered to pack my tooth brush). My friends woke up as I was finishing. I said, "I'm gonna' go and pray, we still have time. Anyone wanna' join me?" They all wanted to pray. We went to the roof and got ready to do so. Soon, we were joined by many residents of the building. It was glorious. It felt good to have prayed with my brothers. After our morning's worth of praying was finished, the five of us sat down to discuss. Rohan said, "This is crazy. It's hell out there!" Shamerul said, "Those carriers, they are vicious. I only thought such an apocalypse was possible in video games. It's crazy as hell!" Shaherul said, "Too crazy too crazy!" Many of our friends were out there. By the mercy of Allah, our family members got the chance to reach U.S.A. and we believed they were very safe. But our friends, they may have been stuck somewhere, or locked in their own house-surrounded by those carriers. Samia, Tahsina, Sadia, Waqar. We wanted to find them. We needed to reunite! But finding them would be very tough indeed. Very difficult! But these were the folks we couldn't live without. So, we had decided. We were to find our friends and bring them back. Back to this camp. So that we could all be safe together. We hoped that maybe we may get to impress Fatimah and join her squad. Such a wild dream only a believer could have. And I believe that we, were believers. But enough of the emotional sharing. We were living in a dark world with colorful, rainbow-like thoughts. Wasn't that embarrassing when I think about it. The carriers were out there. The infected were right behind those walls. They were waiting to feast on us. And they wanted to eat us-saying simply. We human beings required force to survive. But we weren't sure of that just then. One thing odd about us humans-we wait and wait, and wait till all hell would come down to our doorstep and then, do we try to take action. But when we do, it is normally too late. But there are those of us who would have faith even in the darkest times. And maybe that, is what mattered most. Night came rather quickly. We five went to the roof, to look at the stars and mark the locations of our friends' homes on a map. And even though we knew, that everything was nothing but a horror movie just outside those stone walls, we enjoyed that night, sitting under those twinkling stars-hoping for a new world to come. A hope so crazy, yet so beautiful. We didn't know where Lameed, Tahsina, Samia and Sadia, and Deep lived. It was pathetic. We just didn't know. We knew the areas they lived in but not their exact address. Waqar (a very close brother of mine) knew where Lameed (yet another great friend) lived. Sieam knew where Samia, Tahsina and Sadia lived. Tawfic knew where Deep lived. Therefore, we had four addresses. Four valuable addresses! We were so happy at that moment. We danced on that roof and boasted. We screamed and acted weird. Shaherul shouted, "Are we guys crazy?" He thought for a while and screamed, "Yes we are!" We were having an embarrassing party up there. A party of happiness and over-excitement. Little did we know that the next day, would be our first conflict. So, we slept soundly, with happiness all around. Everything seemed to be in our favor, except for the fact that the world was drenched in absolute darkness-a plague of death. But don't worry readers, things get a bit interesting soon.
