A Beautiful Memory

A Beautiful Memory

A Poem by Merle Van Dee

The icy winter wind
Licked the curls of her hair
Laying an unforgiving kiss
On everything else she left bare,
Turning her skin as red and warm
As the fire in the hearth of her soul.

But her springtime eyes
Were almost a promise
Of warmer day ahead
On meadow laden hillsides.

As often happens though
The roar of the city
Quickly drowned out that blissful thought
And I lost her amidst the shuffling masses,
As I have lost a million loves before,
Only to be warmed by her absence
The guarantee of a beautiful memory.
