If I'm Truly Lucky

If I'm Truly Lucky

A Poem by Merle Van Dee

Father, don't you know
This city life ain't the life for me.
I need the sunshine through my hair
     Acrylic on my skin
Smoke in these lungs.
With the whistle of the wind
Blowing kisses at my bare, naked body.
Cool crystal water washing away my pains.

There's passion in my bones
For the Earth beneath my feet
Or perhaps, her body.
      Her crevices and peaks
The way she trembles when our lips meet.
When it's all said and done, Father
I'll chase it down with rum
Out here in this mountain are
And ponder how life begun.
       If I'm truly lucky, Father
I'll die before I am done.
