The Forest

The Forest

A Story by Carl
"

Our souls are damned and now I know we will never leave this wretched place.

"

The darkness crept over the trees and consumed the night sky. With no stars in sight, only the crescent moon could be seen glimmering behind dancing trees. Already my feet were aching, and with every step petrified sticks crunched like old bones.

Deeper, the forest whispered; closer, the branches gestured. Seduced by our own desires, we lingered further into the darkness. Our thirst only grew greater and more wanting the deeper we trekked. We began to lose time, and the whispers yelled. Tormented by the whispers, we compelled ourselves forward to hide from the damning agony.

Entranced, the dark voices filled our heads and spoke. Fearful I looked to Silas only to find death. His body had become decrepit and his face hallow. Hanging loosely on his head, his once red hair was now colorless and thin. He could hardly fill the faded rags that hung over the skin that covered his bones. “Silas…” I sighed his name.

Glazed over and empty his eyes searched wantonly, but not for me. How long had it been. It seemed as if it had only be moments, but now I see my life is wasted away. We only wanted to prove ourselves, how could we have been so wrong. Our souls are damned and now I know we will never leave this wretched place.
