Mask

Mask

A Poem by R.J Calzonetti (SinisterPotatoe)
"

Tried a different style on this one.

Phantasmagorical orchestras

The bureaucratic rapture of our capitalism happiness

I can count the strokes of the pen that whip the back of the page

I can lick the dry honey of sunflowers off the skies’ bruised cheeks

You see

I step through deep water and hold my breath

You see, I stick out my tongue and hold my breath (laugh at death)

I am a loaded gun with no triggers

A silencer with no safety to speak of

You see

The outdoors is just another word for war

I am a medicine for peace that pops pills like an addict

I am safe here; in this glass house

And I can see it all, through the looking glass

I am tinted clouds

You see I am swallowed by the heaven’s bowels

I never really grew up

To fill myself with age that passed along times ago

I cannot spare change

I am rich on my own suffering

Too rich to feel their suffering

(The flavour of my life is rich without substance, in bad taste)

No I can not hear your every word

When the world is screaming in my ear

No I cannot hear you among endless voices

I cannot hear reason (or your rhyme)

Your madness is my reality

Your anger is my blame

Like a bullseye in my skull

You gave me a name just so you could strip me of it all and call me naked

You don’t know what’s it’s like to wear your words like a mask

To only be seen as the mask you never wore

You see

My love for you is blindsided, a rubics cube

Am I just so worn away that the imprint of you on my skin

Can wipe the smile off my face

Are my features never mentioned, the ghost of your writing?

Are you haunted by me?

Did you have to make me a ghost to feel my presence?

Do you mask innocence

Like you wore my colours, a red flag

You see

I may have it all

But you have it all wrong

I am nothing without you

You made me the most beautiful mosaic of scars in a nocturne of stars

You left me (a) broken (record) a long time ago

I am still singing (winding like a music box)

But I’m done listening to you

If I’m sound of mind

You are a mute scream that has no face to wear its own warpaint

You see

You don’t know me

I never was the identity you made for me

My future will never be present

But still

I will be passed around by the hands of the clock

Until my time is over

You see

The deadline is a tightrope to dangle from

You see

Nothing but a masquerade where I ball my eyes out with crocodile tears

And make a zoo of my existence

You see to it

And it is so

I am neither left nor right

Up nor down

(The center of your attention)

But you took me from the haystack of the crowd for the wrong reasons

And direct this show like a maestro

I’m a lost traveller trying to find my way home on a dead-end road

I’ll role with the punches

But only I can play my part

Stage a freakshow like a circus animal

Caged in your eyes

And act like I don’t care
