A Poem by R.J Calzonetti (SinisterPotatoe)
"

A continuation of the poem Deeper Meaning. I felt it was unfinished, and unfulfilled. Now it seems like a real poem. It starts at the beginning of the previous poem, so you don't need to search for it

Meaning

There is no meaning in life

The only meaning is that we will fall over the corpses of our ancestors in time

Stumbling over the same mistakes

Tripping over the same tombstones

Dying the same lives

If that is enough for you

I suppose even in failure we can find meaning

Even the faults in our perfectionism must be beautiful

And sadness sweetens with its sour eulogy

Maybe all the euphorias in the world comes from the idea of a depression so deep you cannot dig yourself out of its burl

Out of its grasping branches; gnarled with the bark to keep bitter cold of winter’s pit out of one’s core

Maybe if you can make music out of silence and nothingness, and grow daffodils on the cliffside

Maybe if you don’t see the big picture, but still have eyes

Maybe if you doubt the ones who came before you, because they could not appreciate the art of our existence

And pity them in their stupor and their needless sorrow; god be damned

Maybe you are a madman

Maybe money grows on trees

Maybe man is god

Maybe I was wrong

Or maybe, you’re a fool, lost as the ones who came before never claiming ignorance

Only pretending to be the answer when you’ve never heard the question

Assuming the right to be a pawn, when your piece is already off the board

And if your life is a game, you are not the rules or the player

You are just the unwanted outcome that follows

Bound for failure in succession

But who can honestly question God anyway?

Do you expect any other answer?

Draw your blood, lines in the sands

Drown in the humanity you have left

Hang on by threads around your neck

Entangled all your virtue in those webs

Waltz to moons while silence ebbs

Live within serenity

Your ending births new entities

For if you’re a fool, then so am I

And we will live the way we die

The struggle is enough me

Spit out the words with lungs that breathe

Together, we become the breeze

Through our stupid stumblings

We teach the others, next to be

With every drop of blood we bleed

And when the ancient weight of dawn is crumbling

Anchored in the sun will beat

The heart of something in the darkness

Our lives will not be disregarded

The light of shadows we’ve unharnessed

Even as a simple fool

Climb us mountains of footstools, towers of pews

And surely we will wear the moon

Shattered still, in our hands the future looms

Break the cycle while the flower petals

Serpentine, the dust to settle

I cannot eclipse the sun

But with starry eyes, the time still runs

And it will pass the honour, bound

No mask will cloud an auburn hell

For we are just a piece that’s severed from the board

Ever reaching up to heavens’ epitomistic roar

I see someone trying to urge you into word economy? I know you're way too considerate to blow this guy off, but I hope you do (secretly of course). I do not like short poems becuz I feel like poets who consistently write short poems are actually sloughing their work off onto the reader, making the reader work for his/her meaning, since he/she hasn't taken the time to delve fully enuf for my liking. But I still read short poems & love them for what they are! Everyone has their own timing.

This is one of your best poems. I was not only swept away by the sensory flow of reading how you pick your words & put them together into interesting patterns . . . that part was secondary in this poem . . . primary was the thought-provoking ideas you pose, one after another, & I found myself stopping to ponder, line by line. Sure this was not a quick read & most people are looking for a quick read. Even if this poem WERE shorter, it still would not be a quick read. You are incapable of producing a quick read, becuz you're such a deep thinker. Even when I feel impatient & I want this poem to go more quickly, I am still compelled to dig a little deeper than I usually do & take some time to think about each thing you say here.

Most of all, about this poem in particular, I love the way you present the experience of living as being both sublime & yukky at the same time. Life is what it is. To examine life without labeling one thing or another as being good or bad or whatever, this is what makes your observations so thought-provoking . . . you lay out some possibilities & tempt us into considering things we weren't previously considering. Lack of judgment in your observations allows us to just ponder instead of having a reaction to the message. There will always be those that agree & disagree! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

You said a handful in the poetry.
"Or maybe, you’re a fool, lost as the ones who came before never claiming ignorance
Only pretending to be the answer when you’ve never heard the question
Assuming the right to be a pawn, when your piece is already off the board
And if your life is a game, you are not the rules or the playery."
I believe we repeat mistakes. Today world is showing ignorance and can't be stopped. Hard to say who is in charge. The world had become very messy. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

You are right my friend. I had fell down often and I got-up.
This is very morose in the style of something Byron might have contemplated. And I consider that fairly lofty praise. But when you say "we" as in, " The light of shadows we’ve unharnessed" and include the reader, I can only assume that you mean "me", not that I don't appreciate the inclusion, but I may be resistant to the application. I still enjoyed the read.

Interesting piece of work here, very thought-filled provoking and interesting read. Actually makes you wonder those questions also. Is nothing new and been redone over and over again. Maybe yes but each moment in time can change in an instance so the possibilities must eventually end. And start repeating over again in life and living. Who knows not I or you. But loved exploring your thoughts and ideas and questioning them myself too. Never a dull read from you. Bravo.

have you ever heard of a dude by the name of John von Neumann (spell check that)?

It wouldn't be fun if I told you why.

On a more objective note with respect to the words... "word economy".... I want you to think of those two words as often as you can. Too much thought articulated can be poison. (you can just PM me if you want, there's a plethora of things I want to discuss with you about this)
