Annabelle Lee was a lonely child. She spent most of her days
in her room playing with her teddy bear with the printed smile. Annabelle was a
girl of age eight with ignorant parents to fill her plate. She played with her
trains that went choo-choo and also dressed her dollies with shoes. Her parents
ignored her and tears she did pour. A friend she did wish and at night, maybe a
kiss. The poor child could only play with herself and sometimes looked at the
picture books on the shelf. A sigh she often did heave when the birds who
chirped leave. She didn't understand why she was so alone; sometimes she felt
she was as good as stone. She'd hide in her shell from the pitiful hell. On a
good day she'd go outside to play. Normally nothing good would happen out there;
usually she'd just sit and stare. It was a normal day like all the rest; her
parents still considered her a pest. Upon the side walk she did sit while
something she felt did split. She looked down to see without any glee, her
shadow was moving, but it was not her doing! She jumped up with a hop but then
suddenly stopped. "Perhaps a friend you could be to me and only me."
She did send. With a cheerful smile she plopped back down. "Shadow, don't
let me frown." And so they began to play with her toys with some how not
uttering a noise. Day after day they would play. The shadow seemed not want to
harm so it drew no alarm. From dawn until dusk, to play, they must. Annabelle's
parents never noticed her gone; she could walk out the door and say so-long!
During scary thunderstorms at night, Annabelle would turn on her light to scare
away the fright and also to see her friendly shadow. At once, she no longer
feared from her window. With her shadow she felt safe; not even a strafe could
scare her away.
And then one morning Annabelle Lee fell down and scraped her poor knee. She
searched around for a band aid or two, but she couldn't find any of the sorts.
She found her mother and begged her for one but she could only resort to
nothing at all. She went up to her room and began to cry and her shadow was
trying to pry at her troubles. "Teach them a lesson!" her shadow had
hissed. "Do it or I will." She said with a shake of her fist.
Annabelle huddled, scared in the darkness. Her shadow came to her again.
"Feel better now." It's voice a gentle caress. Soon later she heard a
shriek from her
mother. "Annabelle
Lee! How could you do this to me? No! Don't even bother!" Her mother
yelled, her face in furry. Confusion came at her in a hurry.
"But mom I-"
Her mother waved her hand and slammed the door, leaving poor Annabelle Lee with
a sigh. "Shadow, what ever did you do?" She whimpered.
"I told you, if you didn't that I would. I left it up to you."
She shook her head and backed down. Her shadow left her with a frown.
Not very long after, "I want you to clean up your mess." Her mother
said with cruel laughter.
Annabelle sighed and got up from her seat. She went to her mother's room and
began to sweep. She cursed the doings of her shadow friend. What was even worse
is she did not even lend a hand. Annabelle Lee began to fill with hatred-the
kind we all dread. She threw down the broom and looked about the room and then
left for the hall. "I hate you. I hate you all!" She shouted and then
pursed her lips.
Her shadow appeared, "Oh what a terrible thing you cursed."
"You did this mess."
"I did, I must fess."
"But I'm the one who gets the blame."
"That's just because your parents are lame."
"Well if I am to get in trouble, don't do it anymore!"
Her shadow's smile tore. "How can you be so mean? I've been a good friend
to you, as you've seen."
"No, I hate you. Get out!"
"Oh look at the poor girl pout."
"I'll go back to living alone."
"You're just full of hate. You're prone."
Annabelle Lee shook her head and to her room she fled. She slammed the door
with a terrible force only to turn around to see her shadow followed course.
"Listen to me child and listen to me well."
Annabelle had no choice and looked up at her shadow and the tears began to
swell.
"It's not me it's your parents, you see." The shadow towered over her
to the point where Annabelle began to cower. "Do not hate me, for I am
simply trying to help you out. So get out there and scream and shout!"
Annabelle sat down for moments to consider the thoughts, but how could she do
it without getting caught? Annabelle Lee got up from the floor and went to the
kitchen and then her mother's bedroom door. She knocked once, twice, thrice.
She knocked and banged and sang her mother's name.
Her mother opened up the door and looked down at her small child. "What do
you want now, you wild child?"
Annabelle Lee had a hand behind her back and had no regrets when she jumped up
to give her mother a smack. Her mother screamed out surprised at the strike and
tried to grab Annabelle, but she put up a fight. "All this time you've
ignored me and well…" Annabelle trailed off and looked down innocently
even though she knew she'd certainly go to Hell. "I'm quite sick of you
and how you never give me anything! Not even a 'bless you! You leave me alone
by myself and I only have the books on my shelf. You never say goodbye and
often do I cry. I have no friends and no trends. You don't even feed me, and
now you'll see!"
Annabelle pulled the knife from behind her back and held it up, ready to
attack. She sprung at her mother without mercy to leave her mother in gramercy.
"You'll pay for the suffering you put my through." She hissed. There
was nothing no one could do. Her mother lay dead upon the red stained bed
spread.
Annabelle dropped the knife and looked at her hands. Her shadow appeared beside
the nightstand. "See, now don't you feel much better now?" Annabelle
nodded. Her shadow gave her much endow. A smile spread across her pretty little
face and her shadow she began to place chase. Not long after one of her
mother's friends arrived at the house to talk about her new blouse. Annabelle
opened up the door with bloody hands and by George she swore. She was shaken
violently up and down while soon everyone had drowned her with screams and
cries.
"What have you done? Oh dear child, how could you?" Many cried.
Annabelle never once shed a tear; she only tried to go back to playing with her
friendly and wise shadow. Annabelle was carted off to some place
that said they'd help her. She was sure that'd be true. We'll see. "Indeed
my shadow was just me."
