The Monster told me this woman would be interesting, but I didn’t know why it was interested in such a strange girl like this one.

She really looked like any other woman; light skin with freckles and orange hair styled and framing a round face. She dressed like any other city girl, nice jeans, low-cut tank top with a black jacket over her shoulders. She seemed normal on the first glance - but her eyes were different. She held pain in them, more pain than the average person.

She walked with me to a twenty-four hour fast food joint, where she ordered two coffees and two sandwiches. She told me her name was Rema, and spoke in a soft and kind voice despite being obviously drunk off her a*s.

So, where are you from?” She asked, sipping at the coffee while we waited on the sandwiches.

Here come the questions...

Not ‘round here.” My automatic reply. I had no reason to tell her, and she probably didn’t really care.

Okay… Vague… But, okay. What brought you here? Kinda a s****y little place.”

I shrugged, “I go where I feel like… Never stay one place too long.” I don’t like leaving too many bodies, or becoming too familiar… Plus, I always look over my shoulder, just incase my nightmares would find me.

You’re a drifter.” She stated more than asked, “Must be lonely… Just can’t find a job or a place to settle down?”

I shrugged again.

Sorry to hear that…” She looked away, messing with her hair. “Look, I don’t know you or what kind of life you’ve lived, but I can tell you it’s still worth living. You can always find something that drives you and motivates you, even if it’s just to prove people wrong or survive a bit longer. Giving up won’t solve anything. Life… is survival, it’s a kill or be killed world out there.” She whispered the last part, and kept her eyes down like it had a deeper meaning.

The waitress came to the table with the sandwiches, placing them in front of us and smiling stupidly before she walked away.

I really didn’t know how to reply to this girl, so I just stayed quiet.

Hey, I work at the bar and restaurant over on 24th. If you ever need food or something, just drop by… ‘Kay?”

I tilted my head, confused. What was this girl’s angle? She annoyed and intrigued me so much I wanted to cut her open just to see what was inside, how she ticked. But, at the same time, I also felt like I knew her… like she was someone familiar even though I knew I never saw her before.

Food, drink, a change of clothes, anything… I’ve… Kind of been on a similar road and I felt really alone, I would hate for someone to feel like that…” She’s kind… I’ll give her that. But, Kindness gets you killed.

Days went by and I started losing sleep again. The Monster wouldn’t let me. I had nightmares that wouldn’t stop even if I killed, so I forced myself to stay awake. Staying awake for days started messing with my head, and I started seeing s**t I knew wasn’t there, like I was half asleep and half awake.

I spent all my money on coffee and energy drinks instead of food, walked around all night, and sliced into my arms just to keep myself awake and avoid the nightmares.

Why don’t you just give in and sleep already? You can’t last much longer.”

I think The Monster liked to taunt me and make me irate. Anything to get under my skin. I wanted to sleep, but I knew if I did it’d just f**k with my head and make me remember things I tried every day to forget. Why? I still don’t really know. The only answer I got was that it was reminding me what it helped me escape from, but I personally thought the damn thing was just being a prick.

Fine, ignore me you ungrateful brat… How long you think you can keep that up for?”

F**k it, I kept walking. My legs keeping my mind awake. I didn’t pay attention to where I was until I noticed I stumbled into a bad part of town and a group of men watching me as I walked passed. Darkly dressed thugs without an idea of what a belt was. They begin following me, and I smirked. They had no idea who they were planning to f**k with, did they?

There’s three of them, don’t be too foolish and get yourself killed.”

I won’t.” I muttered under my breath. “They’re just boys pretending to be men.”

Make sure they shed much more blood than you.”

Hey, you!” I heard one of them shout behind me, “You don’t look familiar, you know where you are right now man? Lost or not, you in the wrong side of town.”

I smirked again, ignoring them until I tried a corner and waited. I heard them come up and drew my knife, as soon as they turned the corner, I jabbed it into one of the guy’s stomachs. I saw the knife in his hand as I did, and barely dodged his wild attack.

The shock wore off the other two quickly, and they jumped into action. I felt the one with a crowbar smack his weapon against the side of my head, making everything white for a moment. I laughed and used my hatred to pull myself out of the haze and slashed into his arm.

I laughed the whole time, slashing at them like it was a game. The third guy also had a knife, but he was sloppy with it and likely only used it a few times. The guy with the crowbar had good aim, but once I managed to snatch it from his hands and cut into his palm, he was a lot less quick.

I was too busy laughing and watching the blood splatter, I barely noticed a sharp pain in my leg. I looked down to see the guy I stabbed earlier also had a gun with a silencer, and the bullet he just fired barely missed my leg, grazing a good few layers of flesh off.

My head was smacked against a brick wall and I hit the ground, my mind cloudy from the damage beginning to catch up.

The one guy, the sloppy knifed idiot, pointed his blade at my face. “Wanna pull some s**t, ya f****n’ Freddy-lookin’ freak?” I didn’t know who Freddy was, but I had been called him before and I figured it was referring to my scars.

I laughed. I laughed so hard I could hardly breathe, and the man’s face held confusion and shock as he looked at me.

So, who you running with? What you doing in our turf?”

I run with the devil.” I watched the confusion wrinkle his face and in one quick motion, I grabbed his wrist and shoved my knife into his chest, twisting the blade while I stared into his eyes. Blood dripped onto me from his lips and open mouth, and I saw the life begin to fade away.

S**t, this f****r’s nuts!”

I shoved the corpse off me and grabbed the gun before the other man could recover from the sudden death of his buddy. He held his wound in his stomach as he backed up, looking around like he could get away. I cut his throat.

The third guy was more of a fight, and I was already losing a lot of blood. I managed to cut him across the eye, and shove him to the ground. He begged for his life, like a coward.

It’s funny. I’ve seen more “hardened criminals” beg for their lives than innocent men and women. You really get to see someone’s true self when they know they’re going to die.

I cut his throat too, and dragged myself away from the scene.

I stumbled down the alley and into the sidewalk by the street. I didn’t know where to go, or even where I wa, but I knew I couldn’t stick around there. Someone could stumble upon those bodies at anytime, and with me being covered in blood and right near them I might get some unwanted attention.

Nothing would become of the bodies. This city doesn’t give a damn about it’s lower class, I can kill hookers, junkies, and gangsters by the dozens and nobody will bat an eye. Cases will go cold or get written off as “drug disputes” or “Gang murders.” My DNA isn’t even in their stupid computers, and I don’t even know my real name so I doubt they do…

I’ll probably do this until I die without even being caught if I’m smart. Then I’d die alone, just another nameless corpse like all my victims… Kind of poetic, really.

I made it about four or five blocks and into a dark alley way before I finally hit the pavement and everything went dark.
