Broken Chains

Broken Chains

A poem about moving on from lost love.

Broken Chains

For countless years

I’ve been a prisoner

Like a canary in its cage

With freedom just a doorway away

I see the light through the bars

Wind blowing in with promises of better days

But I lay trapped with tied wings

In my self-made isolation

And in my broken beak I hold the key

To my salvation

To be free of my imminent desecration

But I’m too blind to save myself

I want to leave this lockup

That I’ve made in my own heart

Where I’ve kept my love for you captured

Never letting myself move on

I could free myself if I wanted

But I just couldn’t seem to let this love leave

Because I thought I was meant for you and that you were meant for me

But I just couldn’t see

No I couldn’t see the hell I was putting myself through

By never letting myself stop

Loving you

So I mustered all the courage I had and took the first step

I placed that golden key in the lock

And with a final turn

My cell doors creaked open

And for the first time I didn’t feel so cold

The sun warmed my feathers

Turning them from gray to yellow

And I let my love fly away

In search of someone meant for me

I’ve overcome my struggles

I surpassed my fears

I’ve let you go

And the old me along with you

No longer will I be entrapped

In rusty self-made restrictions

I’ll spread my canary wings and fly

Leaving behind only a set of broken chains to remember you by
