The night air was freezing, allowing her very breath to be seen before her lips. The basement's chill would be put to shame. Her footsteps echoed on the street as she kept her pace quick. A small hand gripped the sleeves of her coat as a small face looked up to her. The face spoke to her but it went unheard. Sirens blared about them as if to give the loudness of their steps cover from unwanted ears.
"You must run. Do not stop. Nie! You should not fear the sirens but take advantage of them. "
The gravely voice still rang in her ears. It could not be drowned out by the screams of the sirens or screeches of planes lingering in the murky sky. Her eyes looked to them for only a moment. Fear sparked inside her. They couldn't possibly see them from so high, right? She shook her head, allowing her black hair to frill about her shoulders and press against her chin. It felt odd but she didn't dare stop to fix the problem. There was no time to waste. There hadn't been for a year now.
Her lungs ached as she pressed on, dragging the small child along with her. But she did not stop. Not yet. Her dark eyes widened as a bomb dropped. It whistled before it hit its target. She veered back grasping the child out of pure instinct. Her body struck the ground, covering the child's own. A small plea escaped her throat. She waited before peering to the new ruins.
The bridge, their only escape from the German neighborhood was gone. Obliterated only moments ago. A cry came from both of them. It would not be long before the vile came to inspect the damage.
Rin groaned as she woke from her own snoring. She yawned drowsily before stretching out her arms and looking to the bed not far from her own. Another groan formed when she spotted a trembling form amongst a tangled sheet. Her slender hand ran through her raven black hair, pulling at knots and tangles. She wasn't sure if she should wake the sleeping woman or allow her to sleep. Either way the dreams of turmoil would return.
Deciding her action she stumbled out of the cot, swearing bitterly as the sheets wrapped around her foot and she fell clumsily out of the cot. Bright blue eyes glared at whatever they met as the ship jeered beneath her. It was as if the world wished to keep her to the floor. But she calmed herself quickly at hearing a small cry.
Her voice was in a whisper as she drew close to her sister's ear. "Which is it this time?" Nausea filled the pit of her stomach. "The bomb or the fire?"
The woman's eyes opened slightly, revealing chocolate irises. They looked to Rin, fear etched over them. "Bomb." she said. Her voice was soft and barely audible in the silence of the cabin.
Rin nodded her head, her short hair following suite of the action. She gingerly laid on the cot beside her, slipping her arms through hers and pressing against her.
"It is all over now." she whispered. "Never gonna happen again."
A weak smile managed to show but it did not last as they were both pulled back to sleep.
