A Sleepless Night

I sigh softly, my eyes unfocused on the kettle as it slowly heats on the stove. Another sigh escaping my lips as my gaze shifts to the window the moon starting to make its decent from its peak in the sky.

“Looks like another sleepless night for you Silver old girl.” I mumble, reaching out to the take the kettle off the fire carefully pouring some into my mug ready with a tea herbs and a healthy portion of sugar. I return the kettle to a cool part of the stove before grabbing my mug and making my way to one of the many empty tables of the silent Iron Hearth. I softly blew over the rim of the steaming mug, taking a small sip before returning it to the table to cool, my hands loosely wrapped around it trying to block of the cool of the late autumn night.

“Isn’t it a bit late for tea Silv?” A rough voice spoke closely behind me, accompanied by a large calloused hand surprisingly light on my shoulder. My gaze shifting from the mug the taller red head, a small smile forming on my face.

“Old habits tend to die hard,” My eyes moving back to my mug, tentatively taking a small sip of the still steaming drink.

“It’s been two full moon cycles, yet I am still incapable of sleeping more than an hour or two at a time. My mind in alert to a danger long gone.”

The light hand slowly falling from my shoulder to cover one of my own as Hunter occupied the seat next to mine, his eyes soft and full of pity as I’m sure my lack of sleep clearly showed on my face.

“Fear not Silver, you’re no longer out in distant lands fending for yourself. You’re home now,” His eyes lighting up as he takes in the surrounding inn blacksmith before returning to me a serious expression now in their wake.

“And you aren’t alone, I’m hear and I’ll be long dead before I allow another to harm you.” Gruff voice full in the empty silence of the room. My eyes shifting to our entwined hands.

“Oh Hunter, how I wish my mind would believe you as my heart does.” A small chuckle falling from my lips.

“But I fear my mind isn’t as easily convinced. It will be yet another many moons before I will be able to sleep even a few hours. Sadly I don’t believe my body is capable of a full nights rest after so many year on the move, constantly vigilant for anything that may be dangerous.”

I can’t help but want to apologize for the sad look that set into Hunter’s eyes at my words, may they be the truth. But I know I cannot and tighten my hand in his as a silent response. His returning the response in kind, also aware of the sad truth.

“This may be an odd question Silver, but have you ever shared a bed with someone?” his voice quiet, eyes pointedly staring out the window away from me. A blush almost unnoticed in the dark cast across his bearded face. One of my own spreading across my face as my eyes return to my mug.

“No, I can’t say I’ve had the luxury of doing such, why do you ask?” my voice slightly higher pitched than normal, unsure of where this conversation was heading.

“Well I was just thinking, that is if you want to try.” he coughed in him free hand, clearing his throat.

“Maybe you’d like to try sharing my bed with me to try and help you sleep better.” His voice growing quiet as he reached the end of his inquiry.

I quickly look up at him as if to confirm if I heard correctly, the blush now clearly visible on his face an indication that I had indeed heard right. My own voice, usually without hesitation, coming out in small stammers.

“I…I think that may help and will happily accept your invitation to try it out.” My blush spreading as I slowly look up at his face, a warm smile set in as his eyes peered into my emerald green one. He silently stood up and offered his hand out to me.

“Then let us go get some much-needed sleep.” His voice quiet and warm, causing my own smile to relax on my face as I set my hand in his and stood up. Silently following him to the first night of restful sleep of many to come.
